The account is still being treated as a child account in a Microsoft family group, which is why location settings cannot be changed and why prompts mention a minor.
Key points from the current behavior:
- The message about needing to remove a minor means the account is (or was) part of a Microsoft family group with child/parental consent attached.
- Even if only one member appears on the family homepage, parental consent may still be attached to the account, or the organizer/consenting adult may be a different Microsoft account.
To resolve this, follow these steps in order:
- Check if the account is actually a child account
- If the date of birth on the Microsoft account is under the statutory adult age in the region, it is treated as a child account and cannot be converted to an adult or leave the family group until it reaches adult age. In that case, only the adult/organizer can manage restrictions.
- If the account is a child account, the organizer must adjust settings via the Family Portal and Xbox settings:
- Go to the Family Portal and sign in as the organizer.
- Use Manage my child’s profile information or Manage my family’s Xbox online settings to adjust restrictions instead of trying to remove the child.
- If the account should be free (no longer supervised)
- The adult who originally granted consent must remove that consent:
- That adult signs in at Manage permissions.
- They remove parental consent for the child account.
- If the adult does not see the child account there, consent was granted by another adult or another Microsoft account. That adult must sign in and remove consent, or recover their account if they cannot access it.
- The adult who originally granted consent must remove that consent:
- Remove the child from the family group (organizer only)
- Sign in as the organizer at https://family.microsoft.com.
- Next to the child’s name, select Remove consent for this child’s account.
- Go back to the family group and select Remove from family group.
- Note: Only the adult who granted consent can remove that child account. If that adult account is inaccessible, it must be recovered first.
- Leave the family group (if this account is the member)
- If the account is not the organizer and is shown as a member:
- Sign in to https://family.microsoft.com.
- Select the three dots next to the account name.
- Choose Leave family group and confirm.
- If the group has no organizer and at least one other member, the group may be deleted automatically; otherwise, it remains.
- If the account is not the organizer and is shown as a member:
- If only one account shows and it is the organizer
- A family group with only an organizer and no other members remains valid, and the organizer cannot “delete” themselves as a family. The family group object is deleted only when there is no organizer and at least one other member.
- In this case, the issue is usually that the same account is still treated as a child because of parental consent or age. The fix is still to:
- Have the original consenting adult remove consent, or
- Wait until the account reaches adult age (then it can leave the family group and restrictions can be removed).
- For Xbox-specific behavior
- Family and consent status is shared with Xbox. Once parental consent is removed and/or the child is removed from the family group, Xbox location and privacy settings will follow the updated status.
If the account is under the legal adult age, it is not possible to convert it to an adult or fully remove supervision by self; a parent/guardian must manage or remove consent as described above.
