Additional contact-related features and issues within Microsoft Teams Free
Follow these steps to remove the “block” and get the camera working in Teams.
- Check Windows camera privacy settings
- Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera (Windows 11) or Start > Settings > Privacy > Camera (Windows 10).
- Turn Camera access (or Camera access for this device) On.
- Turn Let apps access your camera / Allow apps to access your camera On.
- Scroll down and make sure Let desktop apps access your camera / Allow desktop apps to access your camera is On. Teams is a desktop app and needs this enabled.
- Make sure the camera works in Windows
- Open Start > Camera.
- If the preview is black, check for a physical privacy shutter on the webcam or a function key (for example, a key with a camera icon that may need to be pressed or Fn + that key) to unblock/enable the camera.
- If still black, install or reinstall the webcam driver from the PC manufacturer’s support page.
- Check Teams permissions (Teams desktop)
- Close Teams completely (right‑click the Teams icon in the taskbar/system tray and select Quit).
- Reopen Teams and join a test meeting.
- When prompted by Windows to allow camera access, choose Allow.
- If using Teams on the web
- In the browser, when asked to use the camera, choose Allow.
- If it was previously blocked:
- Microsoft Edge: Settings and more > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Camera and turn on Ask before accessing (recommended).
- Google Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Permissions > Camera, select the correct device and choose Sites can ask to use your camera.
- Safari: Preferences > Websites > Camera, set When visiting other websites to Ask or Allow.
If the camera works in the Windows Camera app but not in Teams, the issue is almost always permissions (Windows privacy or browser/Teams permissions) or another app already using the camera—close any other video apps, then try Teams again.
