Follow these steps to regain access and get support for the business/Azure account:

    1. Confirm which account is being used
      • Business/work accounts and personal Microsoft accounts can look the same (for example, ******@contoso.com). One might be a personal account and the other a work account.
      • When signing in, if prompted to choose between “Work or school account” and “Personal account,” select the work/school option for the business/Azure tenant.
      • If the username or email is not recognized, use the Sign-in Helper to check the account and get tailored guidance: Sign-in Helper.
    2. If the issue is password or sign-in failure
      • For a personal Microsoft account (used for Azure free trials or individual subscriptions):
      • For a work or school (business) account:
        • If self-service reset is enabled, use: Work or school password reset.
        • If that does not work, contact the organization’s global admin or IT admin to reset the password.
    3. If locked out as the only admin (MFA/Authenticator or similar)
      • If this is a Microsoft 365/Azure business tenant and there is only one global admin who is locked out (for example, due to Authenticator or MFA issues), the Microsoft Data Protection team must assist.
      • Call Microsoft Support using the regional customer service phone numbers (see “Support for Business Products” or “Customer service phone numbers” in the referenced docs) and clearly state:
        • This is a business/Office 365/Azure account.
        • It is a company (not education) account.
        • The caller is the only administrator and is locked out.
        • A service request is needed with the Data Protection team to regain access.
      • If support routing is automated, answer prompts along the lines of:
        • Problem: “Authenticator” or “Lost account.”
        • Product: “Office 365 for business” or “Azure for business.”
        • Account type: “Company.”
        • Admin: “Yes, and there is no other admin.”
        • Request: “Yes, I need to create a service request with the Data Protection team.”
    4. If unable to reach support directly
      • As a workaround, create a temporary Microsoft 365 trial tenant (a new, separate tenant) using a trial plan from the Microsoft 365 business/enterprise plans page.
      • After the trial tenant is created, sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center for that new tenant and open a support ticket from Help & support.
      • In the ticket, specify that access is needed to a different, existing tenant where the caller is the administrator, and provide:
        • Admin email of the locked tenant.
        • Tenant domain (for example, contoso.onmicrosoft.com) if known.
        • Error messages seen when trying to sign in.
        • That the account is needed to resolve billing/debt and reactivate the business services.
      • After the original tenant issue is resolved, cancel the trial subscription in the trial tenant to avoid charges.
    5. If Azure tenant itself is blocked or inaccessible
      • If Azure shows tenant/portal access issues (for example, tenant blocked or inaccessible), sign in directly with the tenant in the URL if known:
        • https://portal.azure.com/<TenantId> or https://portal.azure.com/<yourTenantName>.onmicrosoft.com.
      • If the tenant is blocked due to inactivity, the tenant admin must contact Microsoft via global support phone numbers to request reactivation (within the allowed time window) as described in the Azure tenant inactivity guidance.
    6. Once access is restored
      • Sign in to the Microsoft account dashboard or Azure portal and review billing/subscriptions to resolve outstanding debt and reactivate services.
      • For business tenants, ensure there is more than one global admin and consider setting up an emergency access (break-glass) account in Microsoft Entra to avoid future lockouts.
