For Windows 8.1, the product key is normally required for reinstall or activation, and it is not stored in a simple visible file that can be read directly from the system.
If the sticker (Certificate of Authenticity) on the laptop is faded and unreadable and the key shown in other software is not valid, the supported options are:
- Check original packaging or documentation
- If Windows 8.1 was purchased separately (not preinstalled), the key is usually on a label or card inside the box that Windows came in, or in the confirmation email if it was a digital purchase.
- If Windows came preinstalled on the laptop
- The product key should appear on a sticker on the device. If that sticker is damaged or unreadable, the guidance is to contact the laptop manufacturer for assistance, as they provided the original license.
- If the key cannot be recovered
- When the original key (sticker, box, or confirmation email) cannot be retrieved and the manufacturer cannot supply it, a new product key or a new copy of Windows is required to activate.
To ensure any key used is genuine, use the official guidance at How to tell your software is genuine and How to tell your hardware is genuine.
