Active Microsoft 365

The school Microsoft 365 access was removed because the school account or license is no longer active. To keep using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, one of these must be true:

1. A valid school license is still assigned to the school account.
2. A personal Microsoft 365 subscription that includes desktop apps is active and associated with a Microsoft account.
3. A valid retail product key has been redeemed to a Microsoft account.

Steps to try:

1. Check if the school account still has a license
   • Sign in to Word/Excel/PowerPoint with the school email.
   • If a yellow or red banner appears saying SUBSCRIPTION EXPIRED or Product deactivated, the school subscription or license was removed. In that case, only the school IT admin can restore it.
2. If using a personal Microsoft 365 subscription
   • Go to the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page.
   • Sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy Microsoft 365.
   • Confirm there is an active Microsoft 365 Personal/Family (not Basic) subscription.
   • In Word/Excel/PowerPoint on the PC, sign out of all accounts, then sign back in with that same Microsoft account to activate.
3. If using a product key from a card or online purchase
   • A Microsoft 365 or Office product key must first be redeemed to a Microsoft account.
   • Go to Office.com/setup or https://microsoft365.com/setup and follow the prompts to redeem the key to a Microsoft account.
   • After redeeming, install Office from that Microsoft account’s Services & subscriptions page and sign in in the apps to activate.
4. If Office came pre-installed on the device
   • If a banner says Most of the features of <app> have been disabled because it hasn't been activated or NOTICE Most features are disabled because your Office product is inactivate, then:
     • Start a Microsoft 365 Family trial, or
     • Buy Microsoft 365/Office, or
     • Select Use free at Office.com to use the web versions only.
5. If the product key is from a Workplace Discount Program (through an employer)
   • In the activation screen, choose I don't want to sign in or create an account and enter that product key, as described under “Activate Office from Microsoft Workplace Discount Program,” if it matches that program.

If none of these apply, contact the school’s IT department to confirm whether the student license was removed and whether they can reassign a Microsoft 365 license to the school account.
