Windows 10 and Windows 11 already include Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which provides built-in, always-on protection against viruses, spyware, and other malware. For most home users, this is sufficient protection when kept up to date.
Running more than one real-time antivirus at the same time (for example, Microsoft Defender plus AVG) is not recommended. Having two real-time security products installed and active can:
- Reduce PC performance
- Cause installation or update errors (for example, error 0x80070643)
If choosing to install a third-party antivirus such as AVG instead of Defender:
- Uninstall any existing third-party security product first.
- Be aware that Microsoft Defender Antivirus will turn off automatically when another antimalware product is installed and active.
- Ensure the new product is from a reputable vendor and kept updated.
If deciding not to install AVG, keeping Microsoft Defender Antivirus enabled, updating Windows regularly, and following safe browsing and download practices is a fully supported and recommended setup.
