Certification data cannot be moved between different Microsoft personal accounts (for example, from a Hotmail-based Microsoft account to a separate Gmail-based Microsoft account) by merging those Microsoft accounts. Microsoft personal accounts cannot be linked, merged, or combined, and data such as certifications cannot be transferred from one personal account to another.
However, Microsoft Learn profiles can be merged, and multiple login accounts can be associated with a single Learn profile. The key is that the Hotmail and Gmail addresses must both be sign-in identities for the same Microsoft account or be added as login accounts to the same Learn profile.
To keep using the certifications already earned with the Hotmail-based Microsoft account while also using the Gmail address for sign-in to the same Learn profile:
- Sign in to Microsoft Learn with the Hotmail-based Microsoft account that already shows the certifications.
- Go to your Learn Profile Settings (profile icon → Settings).
- Under Account Management, select Add login account.
- Add the Gmail login account.
- If the Gmail address is already associated with a different Learn profile, this will trigger a profile merge. Merging will combine learning progress and certification data into a single Learn profile and cannot be undone.
- After the merge (if triggered) completes, the combined certifications and learning progress will be available under the resulting single Learn profile, and it will be possible to sign in with either the Hotmail or Gmail login account.
Important points:
- Merging Learn profiles is allowed only if at most one of the profiles has a personal Microsoft login account.
- After a Learn profile merge, all learning progress and certification data from both profiles are combined, and duplicates are removed.
- Microsoft personal accounts themselves (Hotmail vs. Gmail as separate Microsoft accounts) cannot be merged; only Learn profiles and their associated login accounts can be consolidated.
If the Gmail address is not yet a Microsoft account, it can be added as a sign-in alias to the existing Hotmail-based Microsoft account via the standard Microsoft account management experience, and then used as a login for the same Learn profile that already contains the certifications.
If certifications appear to be missing after any changes, confirm that sign-in is occurring to the correct Learn profile and, if needed, contact Microsoft Credentials Support for missing credentials.
