How to make MS Foundry workflow(New) run on schedule?

Currently, Microsoft Foundry Workflows (the new visual multi-agent workflow builder in Azure AI Foundry) does not have a built-in native scheduler to run on a time-based schedule. However, the good news is that you can absolutely achieve this using Azure Logic Apps, which is the officially recommended approach for triggering Foundry agents and workflows automatically.

The way this works is you create a Logic Apps workflow with a Recurrence trigger (which fires on whatever schedule you need, be it hourly, daily, weekly, etc.), and then use the Foundry Agent Service connector inside Logic Apps to invoke your Foundry workflow. Specifically, the sequence of connectors you'd add after the Recurrence trigger would be: Create Thread → Create Run → Get Run → List Messages. This essentially wraps your Foundry workflow invocation in a scheduled Logic Apps automation.

To set this up, here's what you need to do step by step:

Go to your Foundry project in Azure Portal → Access Control → Add role assignment and grant the Logic Apps managed identity at least the Azure AI Project Manager role

Create a new Logic Apps (Consumption) resource in the same subscription

Open the Logic App Designer and add a Schedule – Recurrence trigger

Set your desired frequency (e.g., every day at 8 AM, every Monday, every 30 minutes, etc.)learn.microsoft+1

1. Add the Foundry Agent Service connector actions Create Thread, Create Run, Get Run, and List Messages
2. In the Create Run action, pass your constant message prompt (e.g., "Run the daily report workflow")

If you'd prefer a code-based approach instead of the designer, you can also trigger your Foundry workflow programmatically using a scheduled Azure Function or an Azure Automation runbook that calls the Foundry REST API on a timer.

One thing to keep in mind make sure your Logic Apps resource is in the same subscription and resource group as your Foundry project, and that you're using a Consumption-tier Logic App, as that is currently the only type supported with the Foundry Agent Service connector.

I understand you're trying to configure a Microsoft Foundry (New) workflow to run automatically every 5 minutes. Currently, when you create a blank workflow, it defaults to:

trigger:
  kind: OnConversationStart

This trigger is system-defined and tied to conversational agent scenarios. At this time, this trigger is not editable in the new Foundry workflow experience.

About Scheduled Triggers

While you may come across examples like the following:

kind: workflow
trigger:
  kind: Scheduled
  interval: "5m"
actions:
  - kind: InvokeAzureAgent
    id: YourAgentID

Please note that Scheduled triggers are not currently supported in Microsoft Foundry Workflows (New experience). Modifying the YAML to include kind: Scheduled will not work because time-based triggers are not available in the workflow runtime today.

Recommended Approach

To achieve execution every 5 minutes, the supported pattern is:

1. Keep the Foundry workflow as-is.

Use an external scheduler to invoke the workflow endpoint on a recurring basis.

You can use any of the following Azure services:

Azure Logic Apps (Recurrence trigger)

Azure Functions (Timer Trigger)

Azure Automation

Azure Data Factory

Any external cron job that calls the workflow endpoint via REST API

Architecture Flow:

Every 5 minutes → External scheduler triggers → Calls Foundry workflow endpoint → Workflow executes

This approach is currently the recommended and supported design for time-based automation.
