Accidental Resource Group Deletion

One of our developers was sure we could delete a resource group as it was a test environment and it was not. Can we get some help restoring it? We go to restore and asks for a selection from a list, but it isn't there. I see you can recreate the name for the app service but am a bit lost and too urgent.

Thank you for reaching us regarding the issue to restore a deleted resource group that contains crucial resources.
Unfortunately, Azure does not support restoring a deleted Resource Group. When a resource group is deleted, all resources inside it are permanently removed, and there is no recycle bin or “undo” option at the resource‑group level. This is why the deleted resource group does not appear in the restore list you are seeing in the portal.

For App Services:

If you recently deleted an app in Azure App Service, you can restore it within 30 days. To do this, go to App Services in the Azure portal and select Manage Deleted Apps. From there, choose your deleted app

Recommended steps:

Recreate the Resource Group The name becomes available again after deletion, so you can recreate it manually:

In the Azure portal: Search for "Resource groups" > Create > Enter the original name and location.

via Azure CLI
az group create --name <original-rg-name> --location <original-location e.g. eastus>

Restore deleted app:

If you need to do this via PowerShell, you can use the Restore-AzDeletedWebApp command. Here's an example command to restore it to the original app name:

Restore-AzDeletedWebApp -TargetResourceGroupName <my_rg> -Name <my_app> -TargetAppServicePlanName <my_asp>

Good Morning,

We have been able to recreate the resource group and restore the web app. The issue we are having now is once we authenticate with Microsoft, it tries to redirect but is coming back to this page, showing this message.

I am glad that recreate the resource group and restore the web app. But now you are facing an authentication issue.
The Microsoft authentication is completing successfully; however, after sign-in the application isn’t being redirected back to the web app. This typically occurs when the post‑authentication redirect or callback URL is missing or doesn’t match the current application configuration following the restore.

Please verify that the Microsoft Entra app registration includes the correct redirect URI for the web app (for example: https://<site-name>/.auth/login/aad/callback, including the custom domain if one is used). Once confirmed, please retry the sign-in using a private/incognito browser session.

Let us know once this is validated, or if the issue persists

When logging into from an incognito tab, we get the MS login and MFA code, then it comes up with the same landing, saying you have successfully signed in.

The behavior where Microsoft login completes but the page stays on “You have successfully signed in – Return to the website” usually means authentication succeeded in Microsoft Entra ID, but the application is not redirecting back to the web app correctly. This can occur after recreating the resource group because some configuration values may have been lost. Verify that the Redirect URI in the App Registration exactly matches the App Service URL (including HTTPS and paths such as /signin-oidc or /.auth/login/aad/callback). Also ensure App Service Authentication (Easy Auth) is still enabled and linked to the correct App Registration, and confirm that any client secrets, application settings, or connection strings were recreated after the resource group deletion. If the site loads but shows no data, the original database, storage, or configuration settings may also need to be restored or reconfigured.

Unfortunately, once a resource group is deleted in Azure, it cannot be recovered. However, you may be able to restore some recently deleted resources if they support soft delete. You will need to check if the specific resources within the deleted resource group have soft delete enabled and follow the appropriate recovery procedures.

For restoring a deleted App Service, you can use the Restore-AzDeletedWebApp cmdlet. This cmdlet allows you to restore a deleted web app to a new or existing web app. You will need to specify the target resource group, target app name, and the app service plan linked to the app. If you want to restore only the content without the app settings, you can use the -RestoreContentOnly flag.

If the app service is not listed for restoration, it may not be recoverable, and you might need to recreate it manually. If you need further assistance, consider opening an Azure support case to explore the possibility of restoring any specific resources that may have soft delete enabled.
