Hi Ive been having this issue for a while now trying to create a new notebook however everytime i do it comes up with this message

Cannot Create This Notebook

The location might not be available at this time, or you might not have permission to save files to it. Also try using fewer characters in your notebook name.

however i only have one character as the name so that cant be the reason

It seems you are encountering an issue when trying to create a new notebook, receiving a message indicating that the location might not be available or that you lack permission to save files. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can consider:

    1. Check Permissions: Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to create and save notebooks in the specified location. If you're using a work or school account, confirm with your administrator that your account has the required access.
    2. Location Availability: Verify that the location where you are trying to create the notebook is accessible. If it's a network location, ensure that you are connected to the network.
    3. Notebook Name: Although you mentioned using a one-character name, ensure that the name does not contain any restricted characters. The name must be unique and should not include characters like ?\*/:<>|'".
    4. Try a Different Location: If possible, try creating the notebook in a different folder or location to see if the issue persists.
    5. Restart Application: Sometimes, simply restarting the application or your device can resolve temporary issues.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, you may want to consult the support resources for OneNote or your organization's IT support for further assistance.

Hello annonymus, thank you for reaching out to the Q&A Forum.

Note (please protect your data first): Before taking any troubleshooting actions, please do not close any notebooks, sign out, or reinstall OneNote yet, as doing so may result in loss of notes that have not synced. Instead, please copy and paste any recent unsynced notes into a Word document or a text file. For important pages, you can also use Print to PDF so you have a copy outside of OneNote.

Even though you are using a single character for the notebook name, please ensure it is not a symbol such as *, #, %, or /. OneNote can be strict during the initial creation process. As a quick test, please try a simple name such as “Test” and see whether the issue still persists. If you are trying to create the notebook in a shared folder/location, please also confirm you have “Can Edit” permissions (not view-only), and ensure OneNote is signed into the correct account and that the correct destination/location is selected when creating the notebook.

May I ask whether you are trying to create the new notebook using the OneNote desktop app on macOS, or using OneNote for the web? If you are using the desktop application, please verify whether your Microsoft 365 license includes the desktop version of Office. You can check your subscription details here: https://portal.office.com/account/?ref=Harmony#subscriptions

If your license does not include the desktop apps (web-only plans), you may need to create and use the notebook in OneNote for the web instead.

If you do have a desktop-app license and the error continues, please try the following workaround:

    • Sign in to OneNote on the web
    • Create a new notebook from the web.
    • Wait 1–2 minutes.
    • Quit OneNote on your Mac, then reopen it and check whether the new notebook appears and starts syncing.

If the new notebook does not appear in the desktop app, this may indicate an account- or storage-related issue. Since this is an education account, please confirm your OneDrive is not full and is not restricted by your school tenant. When storage limits are reached or an account is temporarily restricted, OneNote may stop uploading new changes and fail to create new notebooks. You can check this by opening OneDrive in a browser and reviewing available storage and any warning banners, or by contacting your school’s IT administrator.

If the issue still persists, you can try a deeper reset of cached credentials. Please note that this can affect Office applications broadly (and may impact Outlook profiles), so please make sure important data is backed up before proceeding. Steps are available here: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/5771699/persistent-sign-in-required-loop

Finally, please ensure OneNote/Office is fully up to date (Help > Check for Updates), as outdated versions can contribute to sign-in and sync problems.

I hope this information is helpful. If the issue still persists, please share the following details so I can assist you further:

    • Your macOS version
    • Your Microsoft 365 license/subscription
    • Whether you are using the OneNote desktop app or OneNote for the web to create the new notebook
    • If using the desktop app, the OneNote version number as well

    Looking forward to your reply.
