1, Verify your Visio license

Most standard Microsoft 365 and education licenses (such as Microsoft 365 A1, A3, or E3) only provide view‑only access to Visio files. With these licenses, drawings can be opened, but editing controls remain disabled. To edit Visio files in the browser, your account must have Visio Plan 1 or Visio Plan 2 explicitly assigned. If that license was removed or expired, editing capability is lost immediately. Because this is an education account, only your school’s IT department can assign or restore this license. Please sign in to your Microsoft account portal or contact your IT administrator to confirm which Visio plan is assigned to your account.

2, Check whether the file can be edited in Visio for the web

Even with a valid Visio Plan 1 or Plan 2 license, a drawing may open as read‑only if it contains features that the web editor cannot handle.
