Unable to see the datasets shared through a datashare.

I created a datashare and shared a couple of datasets to another Azure account.

The snapshot refresh interval is 1 hr.

The receiver got an email that a new datashare was shared.

When he clicked on the links and put the verification code and he sees the datashare, he cannot see the datasets. Is it a privileges issue?

How would the receiver see the data?

    Hi @C Pat

It sounds like you're having trouble with the datasets not appearing for the receiver in the Azure Data Share. This could indeed be a permissions issue. Here are some steps you both can take to address the situation:

Check Permissions: Ensure that the receiver has the necessary permissions to view the datasets. The receiver should ideally have the Data Reader role for the resources involved in the data share. If the datasets are in a SQL Database or Synapse Analytics, check that the Data Share account being used has permissions like db_datareader on the source SQL database.

Validate Role Assignments: The receiver's role assignment may need to be checked to confirm that they have the correct permissions on the dataset level as well as the container level.

Snapshot Timing: If the snapshot refresh interval is set to 1 hour, the new datasets may not be immediately visible until the next scheduled update is completed. Check if a manual snapshot is needed to ensure the new data is reflected.

Verify Data Source: Confirm that the datasets being shared are indeed part of a supported format (e.g., only tables can be shared from Synapse dedicated SQL pools).

Contact Collection Admin: If they still can't see the datasets, it might be worth contacting the collection administrator to ensure that everything was correctly registered and set up.

If the receiver still encounters issues after these checks, it might be a more specific permission or connectivity error.

    Follow-Up Questions:

    1. Can you confirm if the datasets shared are from Azure SQL Database or Synapse Analytics, and if so, whether the proper roles are assigned to the receiver?
    2. Are there any additional roles that the receiver might require to access the data?
    3. Have both you and the receiver checked if the Azure Data Share resource provider is registered in the relevant Azure subscription?
    4. When was the datashare created, and has sufficient time elapsed for the datasets to appear after sharing?
    5. Would you be able to provide any error messages or specifics on what the recipient sees when accessing the datashare?

Hope this helps, and please let me know if you need more assistance!

If the receiver cannot see the datasets after accepting the datashare, it could indeed be a privileges issue. Here are some steps to ensure that the receiver can access the datasets:

    1. Check Permissions: The receiver needs to have at least the Data Reader role assigned to the collections in the Microsoft Purview account. If they do not have this role, they should contact the Microsoft Purview Collection Admin to grant them access.
    2. Verify Email Address: Ensure that the share invitation was sent to the receiver's Azure sign-in email address. If it was sent to an email alias or distribution group, they may not see the datasets.
    3. Check for Accepted Shares: If the share has already been accepted, it will not appear in the Share invites tab. The receiver should check the Received shares section in any storage account they have permissions to.
    4. Guest User Verification: If the receiver is a guest user in the tenant, they need to verify their email address for the tenant to view the share invitation for the first time. This verification is valid for 12 months.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, further investigation into the specific permissions and configurations of the datashare may be necessary.
