I can't delete notebooks in Onenote

the only option the 3 dots menu gives is open.

This is the web based one note.

Hi Peter,

In the OneNote web version, notebooks cannot be deleted directly from the three-dot menu. The Delete option is only available through OneDrive.

Please try the following:

Go to OneDrive (https://onedrive.live.com)
Locate the notebook file
Right-click the notebook
Select Delete

Ive deleted them in Onedrive but they are still showing up in onenote

Thanks for the update.

If the notebooks are removed from OneDrive, but also show in OneNote, then in most cases these are synchronized or cache delays. Please follow these steps:

Refresh the OneNote web page. Sign out of OneNote using your Microsoft account, then sign back in.

Clear browser cache or try to open OneNote using InPrivate/Incognito mode.

Open the OneNote desktop app, if installed, and verify that the notebook isn't syncing in the app. If it's syncing, close the notebook/notebook page or delete the notebook in the app.

It may take a few minutes; however, refresh again once more because OneNote actually takes a while to synchronize completely from OneDrive.

If the notebook is still visible after executing each of those steps, then it is possible that the notebook is stuck due to a sync issue. In that case, Microsoft Support may help remove the stuck notebook from the backend of your account.

First step:

Sign out and then back in.

Status: Failed. Still shows them.

Second step:
Clear browser cache or open it in inprivate/incognito window.
Status: failed. Still shows them.

Third step: open desktop app and see if it is syncing.

Status: they were not in there.

Fourth step: wait.

Status: it is not working.

Please if you can provide more fixes than do.

by the way when I try to open the onenote note I deleted already, I get this error.

Thanks for testing all the steps.

Since this notebook has already been removed from OneDrive but is still present on OneNote with an error prompt to open, this means that this notebook is ‘stuck’ on OneNote’s cloud system. Unfortunately, this cannot be changed at this point on the user’s end.

They will have to delete this notebook from your account as well on their side.

Please try:

Go to: https://support

Select Microsoft 365 / Office > OneNote > Sync or notebook issues

Chat or Request a Call

When making contact with them, you can say:

“I deleted a OneNote notebook from OneDrive, and it appears in OneNote Web but will not open. I need help with deleting this notebook.”

They will be able to clean up the notebook entry as well as refresh your OneNote data.
