Hi KS,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!
I understand how frustrating it is when your Surface Go 2 won’t recognize a USB drive, especially when it doesn’t work either directly or through an adapter. I see that the Q&A Assist has given some suggestions, so I'll only add a few thoughts on this issue:
1 - Make sure the USB drive is working:
- If possible, try the same drive on another computer:
- If it shows up there, continue with the fixes below.
- If it doesn’t work either, the USB itself may be faulty.
- Assign actions upon plugging:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & Devices > Scroll down to AutoPlay
- Toggle ON Use AutoPlay for all media and devices (if it's currently off)
- Under Removable drive, choose Open folder to view files (or Ask me every time)
- Go back to Bluetooth & Devices, check and select if there's USB section
- Turn ON Connection notifications > Restart PC and try again.
2 - Check if the drive appears in Disk Management:
- Press Win + X > select Disk Management > look for your USB
- If you cannot find it but see there's a drive with no drive letter
- Right‑click > Change Drive Letter and Paths > Add an unused letter
3 - Check USB devices in Device Manager
- Press Win + X > select Device Manager > View menu > Show hidden devices
- Look for your USB (often under Disk drives, or USB devices/controllers)
- If you see a grayed-out / a warning icon > right‑click > Uninstall device
- Restart your Surface and let Windows automatically reinstall the driver.
If none of these steps work, there may be a hardware failure with your Surface Go 2's USB port. In this case, contact Microsoft Surface Support for hardware diagnostics and potential repair instead!
