When you experience a noticeable delay while opening Excel files, it may be due to several factors, including excessive formatting in the workbook. Excel Online has a timeout limit of 30 seconds for opening workbooks, and if a workbook takes longer than this, it can trigger delays. Common issues that can cause delays include:
- Excessive Cell Styles: Too many cell styles, shapes, or formatting can significantly slow down the opening process. You can check the number of styles in your workbook by going to the Home tab and clicking the down arrow in the Styles group.
- Complex Workbook Elements: Elements such as worksheet protection, defined names, and complex formulas (like VLOOKUP) can also contribute to the delay.
To resolve this issue, you can use the Inquire add-in to clean up excess or duplicate formatting in your workbook. Here’s how to enable the Inquire add-in:
- Go to File > Options > Add-ins.
- Select COM Add-ins from the Manage menu and click Go.
- Ensure the check box next to Inquire is selected, then click OK.
Once the Inquire add-in is loaded, you can use it to clean excess cell formatting, which should help reduce the opening time for your Excel files.
