How do I retrieve a saved word document?

I can find the document I want but when I open it, the wording is scrambled and not in a format that one can read or use.

Type of document: .docx or .doc or something else?

Is this on a flash drive?

Is this on an external USB drive?

I see from your duplicate post that it is saved on your laptop. Again, I refer you to the article on how to ask a question.

How are you trying to open the document? From within Word or from Explorer?
