When I download a Word document on my 2024 Macbook Air, lately they always open in an old, strange font, and I cannot change the font no matter what I do.

First, check if the original font is installed on your Mac. If it’s missing, Word substitutes it with a default font. Open Font Book and install any missing fonts.

Second, verify if the document has restrictions or locked styles.

If the font option is grayed out, go to Review > Restrict Editing and remove protection. You can also select all text and choose Clear All under Home > Styles to reset formatting.

Third, if the file is in an older .doc format, compatibility mode may force legacy fonts. Save the document as .docx to resolve this.

Last, if the problem persists, your Normal template might be corrupted. Close Word, navigate to

~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/, and rename or delete Normal.dotm. Word will create a fresh template when reopened. Updating Word to the latest version is also recommended.

Hi, it is not grayed out, so I don't think it's restricted. I can "change" the font at the top of the document, but it doesn't change the selected text in the document. The font in question, used by the sender of the doc, is SF (San Francisco, an Apple font). My computer doesn't seem to have that. I tried to download it but it doesn't show up in my Font Book. I'm trying to navigate to that Library area you mentioned. Putting the whole link in my search at the top of my window doesn't work, and so I found the library and could not find Microsoft Office support there (under Application Support). So I'm out of options here. But thanks.

Thank you for getting back to me. I understand how frustrating it can be when fonts don’t behave as expected in Word. This usually happens because the document uses a font that isn’t installed on your Mac, and Word substitutes it, which can make changes seem ineffective.

The first thing to try is checking if the text is tied to a style. If it’s using a style like “Normal” or “Heading,” changing the font in the toolbar won’t override it. Modify the style instead by right-clicking it, choosing Modify, and setting your preferred font.

If that doesn’t help, clear all formatting from the text and then apply your desired font. Another option is to replace the font throughout the document using Find and Replace with the font settings.
