I have thousands of documents and images on Publisher, use it all the time every day! Knowing Publisher will be terminated in October 2026, what are best suggested alternatives?

A few solid options, and one thing the other answers miss.

For a like-for-like replacement, Affinity Publisher is the closest in feel to Publisher and it is a one-time purchase rather than a subscription. Scribus is free and open source if you do not mind a steeper learning curve. Canva and InDesign are both capable, but neither opens .pub files and both are ongoing subscriptions.

The gap none of these solve is your existing library. With thousands of .pub files, the urgent step before October 2026 is getting them into a format you will always be able to open, because once Publisher is gone, nothing above can open the .pub files it made.
