Using Classic Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
Hi Carol,
This is April, I'll be happy to assist you. Sorry to hear that you're having issue with Outlook desktop. Let me help you out.
Based on the description of the issue you provided, you have changed your email password online, but Outlook desktop won't let you sign in, and you can't find where to update the new password.
When you try to sign in to Outlook desktop after changing your password online, do you see a prompt asking for the new password or does Outlook keep looping with the old credentials without giving you a chance to update?
When you change your email password online, Outlook on your desktop won't automatically pick it up, you have to update it manually. Here's how you can do it step by step:
Update your Password in Outlook Desktop:
- Open Outlook
- Click File in the top-left corner
- Choose Account Settings, then select Account Settings again from the dropdown.
- Under the Email tab, select your account and click Change.
- Enter your new password in the Password field.
- Click Next so Outlook can test the settings. If everything checks out, click Finish.
- Restart Outlook to apply the changes.
If There's No Password Field
- Some newer Outlook versions (especially Microsoft 365 accounts) use modern authentication and won't show a password box.
- If that's the case, the fastest fix is to remove and re-add the account:
- Go to File > Account Settings > Manage Profiles
- Remove the account
- Add it again. Outlook will prompt you to sign in with your updated password.
Sometimes, Outlook keeps using your old saved login details. To clear them:
- Close Outlook completely.
- Go to Windows Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts.
- Find your email account and remove the saved credentials.
- Open Outlook again and sign in with your updated password.
I hope this helps. If you need further assistance you can reply to this message.
Thank you,
April P.
