New Outlook email editor

To answer your question directly: Currently, there is no public roadmap to replace the New Outlook editor with the full Microsoft Word engine. Let me explain a little:

• Classic Outlook is a traditional Windows (Win32) application that uses COM integration to leverage the Word engine for composing emails. This enables advanced features like complex tables, styles, and SmartArt.
• New Outlook for Windows, however, is built on a modern architecture using WebView2, essentially wrapping the web version of Outlook in a desktop container. This design ensures consistency across Windows, Mac, and Web, but it also means the full desktop Word engine cannot run inside this environment.

So, if your workflow depends heavily on advanced Word features (e.g., complex table formatting, print layouts, or Mail Merge), my recommendation is to continue using Classic Outlook, which remains fully supported until at least 2029.

You can switch back by toggling off the “New Outlook” switch in the top-right corner

or launching the app named Outlook (classic) from your Start menu.

Microsoft is actively listening to feedback and evaluating feature requests. You can track upcoming improvements via the Microsoft 365 Roadmap.
