    tried everything except rebooting. Didn't want to lose some work. The volume was cranked up to 100% and trying to lower it with the keys barely registered on the screen, still at 100%. Not that I was listening to anything, but I had six windows open, all for the same process, and didn't want the distraction. So I unplugged my earbuds. It dropped to 66% then disappeared. Then I plugged the earbuds back in. The floating window reappeared and showed 100%, then after a second or so disappeared. I was able to adjust the volume using the assigned fn keys with the floating window showing up momentarily and disappearing each time. My suggestion? Temporarily change your audio device and switch back if desired. Worked for me.
