How do I stop windows 11 from going to dark mode automatically

I keep right clicking on the desktop, then select Personalize. Next select colors and then choose mode. It is on Dark mode, so I drop down and select light. It works and the screen goes to Light mode. After about 20 seconds, the screen goes back to dark mode.

As of a couple days ago I suddenly have this issue on my month-old Win 11H2 Pro laptop.

[Edit: I think it's PowerToys' Light Switch feature, but I'll leave the comment here just in case this trips up someone else]

But, the suggestion here isn't helping (yet) as:

the mentioned "Settings > Accounts > Sync your settings" simply does not exist (though it is the suggestion for which I had the highest hopes, as I do have another laptop registered on my microsoft account, but it's been reformatted and is running Debian Linux these days and has been so since before I got this new laptop);

I am not on a managed device (it's my personal laptop, logged in with my Microsoft identity) and all fields in "User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization" are state "Not configured";

~~I am not (knowingly) using any theme managers~~. Edit: I just realized I have Power Toys running (though I don't actually use it yet) and it has a "Light Switch" feature that is default enabled; clearing that seems to let my choice of Dark/Light stay as I want it]

As for step (4), it is not clear how to create a "local" account in "Accounts > Family > Your family" ... I haven't made any extra accounts on this device before, but I do not see a "local" option during account creation. I will continue investigating this, but if it is linked to my profile, then what do I do?

I recently had the same thing occur, except it was turning to dark in less than a minute most of the time. I went and turned the light switch off on Power Toys as suggested by OP, and it worked.

TLDR; turn off PT/Light Switch or upgrade to 0.95.1

Just wanted to follow up that I also had the issue with PT/Light Switch. It appears that it was a bug that was introduced but luckily they have an update that fixes it. The big problem with the bug is that even if you didn't have Light Switch enabled, but had PT installed, it would enable it. And would overwrite your schedule.

Update fixed in Release 0.95.1

Did you using Power Toy?

In Power toy it has feature call "Light Switch" you can find it under System Tools > Light Switch

Now toggle it off :)

Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+D to switch back to light mode. I gave up trying to figure out why Windows 11 is doing this (at work), and found this shortcut someplace online. Have PowerToys installed, but never had time to mess with the settings. This shortcut solved the problem with ~90% satisfaction :-)

Based on your description, this behavior may be caused by:

A group policy or system setting that enforces Dark mode.
A third-party application or theme manager overriding your personalization settings.
A user profile sync or cloud setting restoring previous preferences.
