Dear Microsoft / Minecraft Dungeons Support Team,

I am writing to clarify the multiplayer DLC requirement for Minecraft Dungeons.

I have these questions:

If one player (the host) purchases a specific DLC (for example, “Jungle Awakens” or one of the add-ons) and invites a friend who has not purchased that DLC, can the friend still join the game and play the DLC content?

Does every player in the session need to own the DLC, or is it sufficient that only the host owns it?

Are there any platform-specific restrictions (PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch) or regional differences to this rule?

Currently I found some community posts suggesting that “Only the host needs the DLC for all to play” But I did not find an official statement from Microsoft / Mojang explicitly confirming this.

Therefore, please advise clearly: • If Player A (host) has the DLC, and Player B (friend) does not, can Player B access the DLC missions/items when joining Player A’s game? • If not, what is the recommended approach so both players can enjoy the DLC content together? • Are there any steps to ensure compatible multiplayer sessions (e.g. same platform, licence region, version)?

Thank you very much for your time and assistance. I look forward to your reply.

Dear MrFearo 911

Thanks for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A Forum.

Thank you for reaching out to us regarding the multiplayer DLC requirements for Minecraft Dungeons! This is a great question that comes up often, as our goal is always to make playing with friends as easy and accessible as possible across all platforms.

  • Can Player B (no DLC) access DLC missions when joining Player A’s (host) game? ==> Yes, if Player A (host) owns the DLC like Jungle Awakens, Player B can join and access the DLC missions and items without owning it. Only the player selecting the DLC mission needs ownership; others can play along.
  • Does every player in the session need to own the DLC? No, it is sufficient that only the host owns it.
  • Are there any steps to ensure compatible multiplayer sessions (e.g., same platform, license region, version)? Minecraft Dungeons supports full cross-platform multiplayer. A player on Windows 11 (PC) can easily play with a friend on Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch, as long as everyone has a Microsoft Account linked to their game profile.  All players must be running the latest version of the game to ensure compatibility and stability when connecting. Updates are usually applied automatically.

If both players want independent access to DLC content outside of multiplayer hosted sessions, each will need to purchase the DLC separately.

For Windows 11 gaming, ensuring your system is updated and running the latest version of Minecraft Dungeons can help provide the best multiplayer experience.

Note: While the guest player (Player B) can play the levels and receive all the unique loot, please note that the license for the DLC is tied to the purchasing account. This means:

  • Player B will not be able to host the DLC missions themselves.
  • Player B will not be able to access the DLC content in single-player mode unless they purchase it.
