Outlook Classic Formatting Changed for no reason

New Windows 11 laptop. Transferred Outlook Classic from Surface Pro to new laptop.

Outlook transferred everything fine, as far as I know, and the formatting I've used for years was the same.

Used the new pc for a week or so, and one day unplugged it, closed cover, and moved it a few feet away - to the couch :) .

Formatting in Inbox changed to an unrecognizable display - different fonts, no preview pane, etc. Formatting back to the familiar display has been impossible. Discovered that Sent folder, Deleted Items, and Drafts are ok. Deleted Messages and Outbox (which are empty) are same as Inbox. Can't find a way to duplicate the settings of Sent.

"Apply Current View to Other Mail Folders" is grayed out in Sent display - only operable in Inbox, which is the display I don't want.

Is there a way to correct the Inbox display without painstakingly going through all of the settings? It took 20 minutes just to find the way to have it stop organizing into days (yesterday, etc.).

Thanks for any tips on this - and guidance so it doesn't happen again. Not sure if the closure/move caused it, but it sure would be great to be able to count on a "portable" device.

Hi LJB,

From what you’ve described, it sounds like Outlook’s folder view settings may have been disrupted by a local glitch possibly triggered by a display change or system refresh when you closed and moved the laptop. Outlook stores folder views locally, and sometimes:

Display scaling or resolution changes can cause the layout to reset.

Corrupted view settings in specific folders like Inbox can lead to unexpected formatting.

Transferred profiles from another device may not carry over all view preferences consistently.

The fact that Sent, Deleted Items, and Drafts are unaffected suggests the issue is isolated to Inbox and possibly other folders that didn’t retain their view settings properly.

What You Can Try is :

Reset the Inbox View

To quickly reset the Inbox view:

Close Outlook completely.

Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.

Type:

outlook.exe /cleanviews

Press Enter.

This will reset all folder views to default, which can help if the Inbox view is corrupted.

Note: This will also reset custom views in other folders, so use this only if you're okay with rebuilding them.

Manually Copy the Sent Folder View

Since “Apply Current View to Other Mail Folders” is grayed out in Sent:

Go to View > Change View > Manage Views.

Select the Sent folder’s current view and Copy it.

Name the copyn and apply it manually to the Inbox.

This lets you reuse the layout you prefer without starting from scratch.

Disable Grouping by Date

To remove the “Yesterday,” “Last Week,” etc. grouping:

Go to View > View Settings > Group By.

Uncheck “Automatically group according to arrangement.”

Let me know how it goes, Happy to help!
