Suddenly the default document for Word has become a long, narrow page with limited options at the top, including no Layout option. So I can't change this through Layout and can't figure out how to change through View at the very top of the screen. In addition, I can't delete a document by going to Finder (iMac) and dragging it to Trash. And third, I can't delete a line by simply highlighting it and hitting delete. Must do it by backspace.

If the document is narrow, maybe you need to increase the zoom. Try holding the Command key as you press the + sign.
