I am setting up an intranet site. We have about 45 people and I would like to create a searchable directory of those people on the people profile page.

Hi @Jennifer Dahl,

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

With a team of around 45 people, implementing a centralized and searchable staff directory is a great way to enhance internal collaboration and accessibility. This functionality is typically achieved using a combination of SharePoint’s built-in web parts, Microsoft Search capabilities, and user profile indexing. These tools allow you to display and search for people based on attributes like name, department, title, and location.

Based on your needs, here are some options and considerations:

Option 1: Use the People Web Part

The People Web Part is a built-in feature in modern SharePoint pages that lets you showcase team members with profile photos, job titles, and contact links.

  1. Go to your SharePoint intranet site.
  2. Click New > Page to create a new page (or edit an existing one).

  1. Choose a layout (for example, Blank, Basic text, or Two columns).
  2. Click the + icon to add a new web part.
  3. Select the People web part from the list.

  1. Click Add a person and begin typing a name to select from your organization’s directory.

  1. Optionally, choose to show more details like job title, department, or contact info.
  2. Repeat for each person you want to include in the directory.
  3. Click Publish to make the page live.

This method is best for curated directories and provides a clean, visual layout that’s easy to navigate.

Option 2: Delve or Microsoft Search:

If your users are in Azure Active Directory (AAD), their profiles are automatically searchable across Microsoft 365.

Option 3: PnP Modern Search v4:

For more advanced filtering and layout options, this open-source solution allows you to build a dynamic, filterable directory using Microsoft Search.
