Locked Out of My Only Microsoft 365 Global Admin Account – Unable to Complete MFA

Hello,

I am the only Global Administrator for our Microsoft 365 tenant and I am currently locked out of my admin account.

Issue:

  • MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) is enabled by default for the Global Admin account.

I cannot complete MFA because I no longer have access to the previous authentication method (Authenticator app / phone number).

I already tried resetting the password, but I am still unable to sign in.

I cannot access the Microsoft 365 Admin Center to open a support ticket.

Tenant details:

  • Tenant domain: <Remove PII>.onmicrosoft.com
  • Global admin email: <Remove PII>@<Remove PII>.onmicrosoft.com
  • Organization: <Remove PII>

Request: I need guidance on how to regain access to the Global Admin account or reset MFA for my account. This is urgent as I am currently the only admin and cannot manage users or services in the tenant.

    Hi @Olsjan Bregaj

Thank you for posting question to Microsoft Q&A.

I understand you are in an urgent situation, being the sole Global Administrator for your tenant and completely locked out due to an MFA issue. Since you cannot access the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, the only team at Microsoft equipped with the security protocols to verify your identity and reset MFA for a locked-out admin is the Data Protection Team.

Since you cannot raise a support ticket directly from your tenant, here is the official and most effective workaround to engage them.

Please try to create a trial business account: Go to Microsoft 365 Business Plans and Pricing and click Try for free to set up a temporary Microsoft 365 tenant with a trial license.User's image

Use this new account to sign in to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center and submit a support request on behalf of your primary (locked) account.

Click Help & Support > then choose Create a support request.User's imageUser's image User's image

Note: This method doesn't require you to use your new account for your business. Instead, it allows you to create a temporary global administrator account so you can submit a support request, as your original global administrator account is locked out due to issues with multi-factor authentication. The trial account is free for one month. Be sure to delete it after submitting your support request to avoid any automatic renewals or charges from Microsoft.

    Wish you a pleasant day!

I am locked out of my Microsoft 365 tenant due to MFA. I am the only global admin. Please escalate to Data Protection team.
