How do I stop Xbox controller inputs from controlling Windows 11 taskbar?

Hi, I'm a recent Windows 11 user from Windows 10.

My Xbox controller is able to interact with my taskbar after I click it with a mouse.

From there the A button opens my start menu. This often happens mid game.
B closes the menu and
directional buttons/A can easily select a program to run, again mid game.

This happens regardless of Steam or any other gaming services. Game bar Gaming mode is on.

This feature is new to Windows 11. I just tested on Windows 10.
What is causing this behavior and what can I do to prevent it?

On Windows 11, Xbox controllers can control the taskbar because Microsoft added system-wide XInput navigation support, unlike Windows 10. This happens when the taskbar gets focus (for example, after clicking it), so the A, B, and D-pad buttons act like Enter, Escape, and arrow keys. To reduce this, you can set the taskbar to auto-hide so you don’t click it by mistake, make sure Game Bar shortcuts aren’t mapping your controller, or fully disable Xbox Game Bar if you don’t use it. Since this behavior is built into Windows 11

This is the dumbest function ever applied by Microsoft. Why would you add a function that just flat doesn't work to an otherwise functioning game bar. I love the game bar and now I'm forced to turn it off because of this stupid idea. Then some other much dumber person decided that you cant turn it off. I'm so glad that Linux is becoming the replacement for Windows. Every other day Microsoft adds something else to push their consumers away. Stop trying to be other companies if you have no idea how to apply their functions.

I understand how disruptive it can be when your Xbox controller unexpectedly interacts with the Windows 11 taskbar, especially mid-game. This is caused by a Windows 11 feature designed for living room PCs, that when a controller is connected, it's treated like a media remote, navigating the interface without a mouse and keyboard. Any action that gives the Windows desktop "focus" will trigger it.

Solution 1: Disable controller navigation via Registry

Open Registry Editor > Navigate to: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GameDVR
Look for AppCaptureEnabled > set its value data to 0
If it does NOT exist > create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value
Close Registry Editor > restart your computer.

Solution 2: Disable the GameInput Service

Press Win + R > type services.msc > Enter
Find GameInput Service > double-click > properties
Click Stop > Change Startup type to Disabled
Apply > OK > Restart your PC.

Note: Some modern games might require this service. If you notice issues with a specific game after this, you can return here and set the Startup type back to Manual.

Solution 3: Xbox Game Bar settings (additional checks)

Press Win + G > Enable click-through; or disable if it's already on
Click Settings (gear icon) > More settings > Shortcuts > Uncheck the following:
- Open Controller Bar using button on a controller not over a game
- Open Controller Bar using button on a controller (optional)
Go back and navigate to General > open the game you play
Turn on the option to Remember this is a game

Unfortunately these fixes have not worked for me, and it is apparent from browsing other sites like Reddit and Steam's forums that there is no widely known way of disabling Windows 11's interference with the functions of multiple inputs on XBox controllers since the most recent update. The only proposed solution is rolling back updates to one that pre-dates this forced feature, which is obviously not a viable solution.

There must be a way to disable this entirely somehow as it is making Steam unusable. Desktop layouts in Steam are now completely unusable, which can be mitigated when using Big Picture, but then the Guide Button Chords are unusable as they require holding the XBox button, which of course opens task view.

This feature was designed to make desktop navigation with a controller better for both handhelds and living room PC use, but due to its pervasive nature and the inability to disable it, I am more ironically more reliant on a mouse and keyboard than I ever have been when using an XBox controller.

I don't even hate the feature inherently - I am sure it is fine for some people depending on how they wish to use their PC, but for anyone reliant on Steam's own controller API, it is an absolute mess.

So why would Microsoft's "GENIUS" software design team decide to stupidly FORCE this feature onto windows users WITHOUT AN OPTION TO DISABLE IT??

Why does the guide button on controllers bring up the task view when you hold it WITH NO OPTION TO DISABLE IT?

WHY DO YOU HAVE TO MESS WITH THE REGISTRY WHICH IS DANGEROUS AND RISKY, JUST TO DISABLE SOMETHING THAT COULD'VE EASILY BEEN A TOGGLEABLE OPTION IN THE SETTINGS MENU??

Do the absolute real and certified 100% "geniuses" over there not see how incredibly infuriating and frustrating not only forcing settings that some people don't even want at all on is, but also WITH NO WAY TO DISABLE THEM?? This is absolutely unacceptable and outright pathetic behavior from microsoft and I see exactly why my friends switched over to Linux and refuse to pay for ANYTHING microsoft offers.

Mr. Lychee: External Microsoft Staff, you or your fellow staff members HAVE to do something about this. I'm not blaming you or your team in the slightest, but can you not see the issue with having to tell us to mess around with the REGISTRY and risk potential instability just to fix a problem that could've been easily solvable with a mere toggle button? I'm not sure what kind of pull you have there at Microsoft if any at all, but for the love of GOD PLEASE in SOME way or another, tell the software engineers to stop adding useless, pathetic poorly implemented and intrusive "features" that barely anyone uses in the first place with no option to turn them off. Dumb decisions like that is exactly why so many people are no longer using Windows and the Linux user % is rising.
