Windows 11 freezing entirely when left idle for too long

Lately, since around maybe the 23rd of this month, my computer freezes when I leave it idle for more than a few minutes. Like just entirely, I have to turn it back on and off again in order for it to work again. I have tried several things, like disk cleanup, defragging, updating, and turning off unnecessary things in task manager but nothing's working. I'm not sure if it's something in the computer itself or some kind of software bug.

I have i9-9900KF and 32Gb memory, MSI Z390 Pro motherboard and Kingston 2Tb NVME hdd. I have the exact same problem. So it is not some memory or cpu related problem.

I have also noticed, that if you make a new profile, problem does not excist for some time. But it comes back later, so somehow this is user related.

i had this issue also , i reset my pc and deleted everything, it worked for like a day , then after giving up i tried running a full boot-time check disk chkdsk ,gemini suggested this, i did and restarted my pc, i checked the report fromevent viewer and saw it had corrected some corrupted files in cache, now it hasnt frozen at idle or at sleep ,try this ,ask instructions from gemini or any other ai, it worked for me, i will update you guys if anything happens but i hope it runs smoothly, also make sure you run system file checker and repair any corrupt files

Hi!

Thank you for the information. This hardware is very limited for Windows 11, especially with only 4 GB of RAM and a low-end CPU. That’s why you’re running into freezes when left idle. Windows 11’s background tasks (indexing, updates, defender scans, memory compression) can easily max out the 4GB ram.

You've done all possible checks and how to make your notebook faster, It will not run smooth by any other troubleshooting anymore. You need to upgrade your RAM (if possible 8GB minimum.)

You can do this, It might help a bit.

Basic system settings

Go to Settings → System → Power & Battery → Power Mode → Set to Best performance.
Disable background apps: Settings → Apps → Installed Apps → 3-dot menu → Advanced options → Background app permissions → Never.
Turn off unnecessary startup apps (Task Manager → Startup tab).
Disable transparency effects: Settings → Personalization → Colors → Transparency effects → Off.

Update all drivers

Install the latest Intel chipset/graphics drivers from Intel’s site.
Update BIOS if possible.

Storage

Ensure you have at least 15–20 GB free disk space all the time.

Recommendation:

Upgrading RAM (if possible — some Celeron notebook/laptops are soldered, but check if it has a slot).
Switching to Windows 10 (lighter, officially supported until Oct 2025).

Reminder: System specs currently is on bare minimum and will not run on Windows11 properly.

4 GB RAM is barely usable (system will stutter/freeze, like on your Celeron N4000).

Intel Celeron N4000 (2017) does not appear on Microsoft’s official supported CPU list → meaning your laptop is technically running Windows 11 unsupported.

Microsoft really intends 8 GB RAM and an i3/Ryzen 3 or better for smooth performance.

I've been using Windows 11 on this computer since it came out and it's been working very adequately---not "barely usable" at all, it only just started doing this freezing thing. I will look into the things you recommended, however. Thank you

its a desktop all drivers Bios latest and up to date.

hi its a Desk top Intel i5 14600k 3.5ghz 36 of RAM, NVidia GT 710 @gb, only used for general computing, ripping cd's, streaming etc.

Can you give me a bit more information like, what device are you using (desktop or laptop) state the model if laptop and parts like CPU, GPU, RAM for desktop.

It is an HP Laptop 15-bs2XX. These are all the specifications, I think?
