Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

    1. Have you tried connecting your device to an external monitor to see if the dots appear there as well? If possible, could you provide us with an image of how it looks? (You can take a picture with your mobile device and upload it here.)

This will help us determine whether it is a software or hardware issue.

    1. Also, do the blue dots appear when the laptop is displaying the BIOS or during startup before Windows loads?

You can boot your PC in a clean boot environment and see if the Blue dots appear there. This will help us determine whether any third-party app is causing the issue.

    Hi Leif McGuire,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Microsoft Q&A. I can understand the inconvenience this issue has caused you. To help resolve this issue, please follow the steps outlined below:

Step 1: Check if the Issue is Hardware or Software

    1 - Boot into BIOS/UEFI (Restart > Spam Del/F2/F12):

    • If dots appear in BIOS > Hardware issue (GPU, display, or cable).
    • If dots only appear in Windows > Software/driver conflict persists.

2 - Test with a Live Linux USB:

    • If dots don’t appear in Linux > Windows/driver problem.
    • If dots persist in Linux > GPU or monitor is failing.

Step 2: Rule Out GPU Failure

1 - Stress Test the GPU:

    • Use a GPU stress-testing tool to load the graphics card.
    • If dots increase or screen crashes > GPU is defective.

    2 - Monitor GPU Temperatures:

    • Use a system monitoring tool to check GPU temperatures and performance.
    • If temps exceed 85–90°C > clean fans/reapply thermal paste.

3 - Try Another GPU: Swap in a different GPU—if dots vanish, your original GPU is faulty.

Step 3: Test the Display Panel/Monitor

    • Try a different monitor and replace HDMI/DP cable.
    • Test another port (e.g., switch from HDMI to DisplayPort).

Step 4: Disable Hardware Acceleration in Apps

Reduces GPU load in apps like Discord, where the dots are noticeable, addressing potential app-specific conflicts This is quick and targets software issues.

    • In Discord: Open Discord > User Settings (gear icon) > Appearance > Toggle off Hardware Acceleration > Restart.
    • In Browsers (if used): Go to Settings > System > Turn off Use hardware acceleration when available > Restart browser.
    • Test on a dark background.

    Step 5: Reinstall Graphics Drivers

Addresses driver mismatches or corruption, especially since your prior driver attempt failed due to a model mismatch. A clean install ensures no residual driver issues.

1 - Identify GPU: Right-click Start > Device Manager > Expand Display adapters to note your GPU.

    2 - Download Driver:

    • Visit and download the drivers from their official sites.
    • Select your GPU model and Windows 10 (64-bit or 32-bit).

3 - Boot into Safe Mode: Press Windows + R > Type msconfig > Boot tab > Check Safe boot (Minimal) > Restart.

    4 - Use DDU:

    • Download DDU.
    • Run DDU in Safe Mode, select your GPU > Clean and restart.

5 - Install Driver: After reboot, install the downloaded driver > Restart again.

    6 - Test on a dark background.Step 5: Reinstall Graphics Drivers

Addresses driver mismatches or corruption, especially since your prior driver attempt failed due to a model mismatch. A clean install ensures no residual driver issues.

1 - Identify GPU: Right-click Start > Device Manager > Expand Display adapters to note your GPU.

    2 - Download Driver:

    • Select your GPU model and Windows 10 (64-bit or 32-bit).

3 - Boot into Safe Mode: Press Windows + R > Type msconfig > Boot tab > Check Safe boot (Minimal) > Restart.

    4 - Use DDU:

    • Download DDU.
    • Run DDU in Safe Mode, select your GPU > Clean and restart.

5 - Install Driver: After reboot, install the downloaded driver > Restart again.

    6 - Test on a dark background.

Step 6: Test in Safe Mode

Determines if the issue is software-related (e.g., drivers, apps) or hardware-related (e.g., monitor, pixels) by loading minimal drivers and services. This guides next steps.

    • Press Windows + R > Type msconfig > Boot tab > Check Safe boot (Minimal) > Restart.
    • In Safe Mode, open a dark image or Discord to check for blue dots.
    • Exit Safe Mode: Run msconfig again > uncheck Safe boot > restart.
