I came across this related thread: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/3871623/after-a-windows-update-my-system-broke-and-now-i-c

I saw that it has an answer, and I’ve tried all the suggested steps — including checking Windows activation status, running sfc /scannow, slmgr.vbs /ato, reinstalling Minecraft, using the correct Microsoft account, and even reinstalling Windows.

Here’s the full context:

The original issue began after a full clean reinstallation of Windows. Upon trying to log into Minecraft (with my son’s Microsoft account, which owns the game), I received:

Error code: 0x80004005 – Eroded Badlands.

“A file required for Windows activation (WPA) is either corrupted or missing.”

Later, I reinstalled Windows again — this time keeping my apps and files — and tried logging in once more.

The launcher:

  • Did not ask for a password
  • Immediately sent a request to the Microsoft Authenticator app
  • I approved the request, but still received: “The account or password is incorrect” (despite not entering a password at all)

After that, the login attempt started returning “Too Many Requests”, and eventually reverted to the original activation error.

Since then, I’ve tried:

  • Resetting the network and changing my external IP address
  • Using VPNs from other regions
  • Clearing all Xbox, Microsoft Store, IdentityCache and TokenBroker data
  • Testing with other Microsoft accounts
  • Logging in from other devices
  • Verifying that my Windows is activated and fully up to date

I can confirm the problem is specific to this device.

The same account works on other devices and networks.

I contacted Microsoft support, but they redirected me back and forth between general support articles and the Authenticator team, without a clear resolution.

This has been going on for several days now. I’m trying to access a product we own, on a legitimate and activated system.

What should I do to restore proper access?

Could there be a backend lock tied to this device’s fingerprint or hardware ID that needs to be manually released?

Thanks in advance.
