I had many tasks in my To Do app. The screen flashed and 75% of them disappeared!! I checked my planner app and all my to do's are in planner but some of them are not showing up anymore in the To Do app. It does not make sense what tasks are not showing up and which ones are. I restarted my computer hoping it would show up and resync but it has not. I am freaking out and feel a little lost without my to-do list that I spent a lot of time building.

Hi Michal Smith,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing the issue regarding missing tasks in your Microsoft To Do app. Based on your description, we understand that while many tasks have disappeared from To Do, they are still visible in Microsoft Planner. This indicates that the data is intact and the issue is likely related to syncing or display within the To Do app.

Below is a detailed step-by-step guide to help you restore your task list:

  1. Check Across Devices and Platforms
    • Log in to https://to-do.microsoft.com using a different browser or device (e.g., mobile or desktop app).
    • If your tasks appear correctly on another platform, the issue is likely with the local app.
  2. Verify Planner Integration Settings
    • Open the To Do app > Settings > Connected Apps.
    • Ensure “Planner (Tasks assigned to me)” is turned ON.
    • Toggle the setting OFF and then ON again to refresh the connection.
    • Optionally, create a test task in Planner assigned to yourself to trigger a sync.
  3. Force Account Re-sync
    • On Windows: Go to Settings and click “Sync” or press Shift+F9.
    • On mobile: Pull down to refresh.
    • Alternatively, sign out and sign back into the To Do app to reload data from the server.
  4. Clear Cache or Reinstall the App
    • If using the web version: Sign out, clear browser cache and cookies, then sign back in.
    • For desktop: Uninstall and reinstall the To Do app to ensure a fresh sync.
  5. Check Outlook Deleted Items
    • Visit Outlook Web and check the “Deleted Items” folder for any tasks that may have been mistakenly flagged.
    • If found, restore them to make them reappear in To Do.
  6. Identify Patterns in Missing Tasks
    • Check if the missing tasks share common traits (e.g., no due dates, from a specific Planner plan).
    • Try adding a due date to one missing task in Planner to see if it reappears in To Do.
  7. Contact IT Administrator (if applicable)
    • If you’re using an Education account, ask your IT admin to verify your Planner license and check for any service issues in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
  8. Use Planner as a Temporary Solution
    • Use the “My Tasks” view in Planner to track your assignments.
    • You can also export tasks to Excel or copy them into Word/OneNote for reference.
  9. Ensure To Do App is Updated
    • Check for updates via the Microsoft Store or app store.
    • If already updated, try reinstalling the app to reset its state and sync tasks afresh.

This issue is most likely a sync or display error, not actual data loss. Since your tasks are still visible in Planner, we’re confident they can be restored in To Do by following the steps above.
