I've worked offline for months and when I finally synced my oneNote with oneDrive, I've lost more than half of the work. Can I get any back?

Hi,

I've been using OneNote on my macbook for months but I always kept it offline as I did not have a oneDrive account to be able to sync.

I've then needed to be able to share my work with colleagues and therefore created an account to have oneDrive and be able to sync.

Once done and logged in, the notebooks started syncing. but now I have many that won't load when I click on them and I've got many pages missing altogether from my notebook. is there a local offline backup I can restore from please. it's a lot of work I lost. Thank you

    Dear Erika,

Good day! Thank you for posting on the Microsoft Community. I'm happy to help you!

I apologize for the experience you have had with this issue.

To assist you better, could I confirm the following information:

    • Did you sign in with a personal Microsoft account (e.g., Outlook.com, Hotmail) or a work/school account (e.g., provided by your organization)?
    • Before syncing, where were your notebooks saved?
    • What version of OneNote are you using? You could check it by: Go to File > Account > About OneNote
    • Did OneNote prompt you to move or merge notebooks when you signed in?
    • Are the missing pages from one specific notebook or multiple?
    • Have you set up Time Machine on your MacBook? It’s a built-in backup feature on macOS. It automatically backs up your entire system, including apps, files, and system settings, and allows you to restore previous versions of files or even your whole system.

Your confirmation would be very helpful!

In the meantime, kindly try the following suggestions to resolve:

    • Check OneDrive Version History
      • Go to OneDrive and locate the synced notebook
      • Right-click > “Version history” to see if there are older versions of the files for you to restore
    • Check OneNote online

Kindly let me know when there are any updates so I could find additional ways to assist you.

I'll be glad to hear your update!

    Best regards,
