How to update a custom field in a SharePoint item without increasing the version?

Is it possible to update a custom field value in a SharePoint item without triggering a version increment? If so, what approach can be used?

I found some rest API I was able to modify filed but version increased but modification time not.

I tried add in body in REST API call

"bNewDocumentUpdate": true

I played with headers

'Accept': 'application/json;odata=verbose',
'Content-Type': 'application/json;odata=verbose',
'X-RequestDigest': requestDigest,
'IF-MATCH': '*', 
'X-HTTP-Method': 'MERGE'

    it is working without this header 'X-HTTP-Method': 'MERGE'

    field is updated and version is still same

    We use REST API's validateupdatelistitem. This works well.
