Why my shortcut key for Bold option automatically change from 'Ctrl+B' to 'Ctrl+ N'? (Word for Windows)

I'm currently using Microsoft 365 and while using word, my shortcut key for Bold option automatically change from 'Ctrl+B' to 'Ctrl+ N'

I have to change it back to 'Ctrl + B' manually (several times) but it keeps automatically changing to 'Ctrl + N' again and again. It is quite annoying.

I change my shortcut for Bold option back to 'crtl + B' as inserted picture

Please let me know how to set 'Ctrl + B' as a shortcut key for Bold option permamently.

    Make sure that you send feedback to Microsoft regarding the lost/redefined shortcuts (which is an obvious bug—see previous replies in this thread). Use Help > Feedback from within Word and/or the portal at https://feedbackportal.microsoft.com/feedback/forum/fb6d67e3-301c-ec11-b6e7-0022481f8472.

    You should be able to manually modify the shortcut, though. Have you done any troubleshooting to see what fails in that process? For example, are there any signs that your Normal template is being overwritten each time you log in to your PC? If that is what happens, the underlying cause could be a (poorly designed) add-in or, if you are in a corporate environment, it could be company policy (not a very good policy).

    Hi Shadrack, thank you for taking the time to reply.

    I've tried this multiple times, which i think has been said before in this thread but i could be wrong, and Word just changes it back the next day. Could there be a reason that that's the case?

    I think another thing is that a lot of people just dont understand why, after all these years, the key combination is suddenly changed? There seems to be a definite lack of communication about that.

    Anyhow, i hope you can provide insight on both those points, and thanks again!

    One of the most ridiculous bugs in recent times, but I expect nothing less from Microsoft. The sooner you are completely overtaken by your competition the better.

    1. Open Word Options:
      • Go to File > Options.
    2. Customize Ribbon:
      • Select Customize Ribbon from the left menu.
      • Click on the Customize button next to Keyboard shortcuts at the bottom.
    3. Modify Shortcut:
      • In the Categories list, select Home Tab.
      • In the Commands list, find and select Bold.
      • In the Current keys box, you might see Ctrl + N. Click on it and press Remove.
      • In the Press new shortcut key box, press Ctrl + B.
      • Click Assign and then Close.
    4. Save Changes:
      • Click OK to save your changes and close the Word Options dialog.
