Excel Error "Excel ran out of resources while attempting to calculate" upon calculation interruption

Hi Aaron, thank you for posting this. I am in the same boat. I have a complex spreadsheet that has worked for years. It contains power query tables and most formulas use dynamic ranges. We are running it on a windows virtual server with lots of CPU and memory capacity. Using Office 365 E by the way.

It worked perfectly until the January 31st 2025 office update; I'm not sure of the version number of this update. I have never seen this error before. I had daily backups of this same workbook going back months and they are also demonstrating this same error. Which suggests it is not the workbook but an Excel bug or limitation change related to the update.

On Tuesday of last week, I pushed through an update on our operating system and the workbook appeared to work for a few days but once again I'm getting this error.

At this point, I am going to get our IT guys to roll back our excel version to pre January 31. Any permanent solution would be welcomed.

Hi Snow, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I would need to take some time to remove sensitive information from my files.

That said, my concern is that this happens on many files, and I never (as far as I remember) had such an issue previously, I mean before that update to 16.93.1 or 16.93 (not sure which of the 2 updates introduced the issue). Previously if I interrupted a calculation it would simply stop calculating... I didn't need to completely exit Excel and restart it... never. Now, I almost systematically get this message "Excel ran out of resources while attempting to calculate..." and then I need to close all Excel workbooks and exit Excel if I interrupt a calculation. This is such a systematic issue that I assume this is probably happening with other users. Don't you got other users reporting that issue after those updates ?

This can be a common problem, especially with large or complex spreadsheets. Simplify complex formulas or break them down into smaller parts. This can help reduce the amount of resources needed for calculations.

Could you share a test file? Then I can help you optimize the formulas on that file.
