How to disable Copilot for all applications - Mac

I don't want to use the copilot features that have automatically been added to my Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PPT, etc.) - and I feel that this should be something that we are able to do, without having to purchase a subscription to copilot and then disable it.

How can I disable these features, to stop the shadow offer to use copilot on every new line I start on a word document and remove the icon from the tool bar?

This should be something that is an optional add on, rather than a mandated installation.

    This method also seems to work with the current version of Word:

    • Start Word. From the top-line Word menu, go to Preferences, then Privacy.
    • Click Manage Connected Experiences.
    • Clear the checkbox next to "Turn on all connected experiences." Ignore the warning message. Click OK.
    • Close the Preferences menu, and quit Word.
    • Make absolutely certain that you have quit Word, then restart it.
    • From the top-line Word menu, go to Preferences, then Copilot.
    • Clear the checkbox next to Enable Copilot, and click OK.

    This seems to work for some users but not for others. Even if it works it disables a host of other features which amounts to throwing out the baby with the bath water. See this article for details: Connected experiences in Office
