A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Jimi,
Thanks a million.
I am free of that stupid copilot nonsense .
This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
I don't want to use the copilot features that have automatically been added to my Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PPT, etc.) - and I feel that this should be something that we are able to do, without having to purchase a subscription to copilot and then disable it.
How can I disable these features, to stop the shadow offer to use copilot on every new line I start on a word document and remove the icon from the tool bar?
This should be something that is an optional add on, rather than a mandated installation.

Thank you for this solution—it worked for me as well!
Mac user here. After scouring a few threads, the following solution worked for me:
- Open Word and turn off automatic updates.
- Delete the Word app.
- Go to this page: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdates/update-history-office-for-mac
- Download this version of Word: 16.89.1 (24091630), September 17, 2024
- Install new version of Word.
- Open it, quit, open it again.
- Success! For me anyway, the copilot icon has vanished and I'm back to Word working as I want it to.
Thanks everyone for all the helpful suggestions.
Cherry.Z's advice was the worst advice I've ever seen on a Microsoft Forum, and I've seen some bad advice before. Every detail is wrong.
I can confirm that this drastic solution works (and add the further detail that you can turn off Automatic Updates from Word's top-line Help/Check for Updates menu; this opens AutoUpdate, and you can simply uncheck the box for automatic updating):
When Microsoft fixes this absurd setting, we can presumably go back to automatic updates.
There IS NO File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options.
There IS NO File > Options at all in the Mac version of Word.
There IS NO File > Feedback either.
Have you ever even used Word for Mac? Are you just copy-pasting canned replies?
They're just using Co-Pilot to reply -- it's the same people who don't actually have their own thoughts in writing who are writing the software and replying in the forums. But be thankful! There will never be a higher ratio of actual humans to bots in the future as we have now in January 2025!
