From Microsoft Works to Access

I am a Landscape Designer and I use my database plant-cat to refer to and to add to my plant list. It is a catalog. I am continually editing through the process. When I am done I like to crate a report to give to my clients. Microsoft Works was EASY. Access is not so easy. I want to add a field so I can add my clients name so that I can then create a report specific to that client. Hopefully that makes sense.

OK. At the top it says plant Properties.

Then tabs that say..... General Security Details Previous Versions

Next in is the Access icon and plant in the box

Next Type of file: Microsoft Access Database(.accdb)

Next Opens with: Access Icon the word Access button that says Change

Next Location: C:\Users\Gates\OneDrive\Desktop

Next Size: 640KB (655,360 bytes)

Next Size on disk: 640 KB (655,630 bytes)

Okay, that's what we need to move on to the next step. That is, in fact, the shortcut as we discussed. 👍

The accdb is called "Plant.accdb" based on what we see here.

Unfortunately, it's in a OneDrive Folder. "C:\Users\Gates\OneDrive\Desktop"

If the Read-only box is checked, that would appear to be the problem with not being able to change a table in it.

So, let's go to your OneDrive folder and move that accdb, Plant.accdb into a folder on your computer.

1. Create a new folder on the C:\ drive. Call the folder "Plant" or something similar.
2. Move (not copy) Plant.accdb from OneDrive into the new folder.
3. Create a new shortcut on your desktop for the Plant.accdb in the new folder.
4. Use the shortcut to open it, or double-click on the accdb in the folder to open it.
5. Now, make this new folder a Trusted Location so code in it can run. Follow the instructions here:

6. You should then be able to make changes in the database.

Do not repeat the mistake the first developer made by putting it back in OneDrive. Access is not meant to run from OneDrive, DropBox and similar locations.

This time I right clicked on the icon on my desktop. This one looks like your image that you sent me. It has a shortcut tab. The target is called Microsoft Office\root\Office16\MSACCESS.EXE" Does that change things??

Not really, assuming we're on the same page. Apparently there are two shortcuts, one just for Access and the other for the Plants database?

What matters is that the Plants.accdb needs to be moved from OneDrive to a folder on your computer, preferably the C:\ drive as described above.
