Why are ads suddenly appearing on my YouTube videos?

I took a look at that link. I'm actually not seeing ads in YouTube premium, only in PowerPoint. I checked my Chrome settings and third party cookies are allowed so I think that covers that.

I just had a chat with a YouTube customer service person and I get the sense that the ads showing in Microsoft PowerPoint is the way they currently intend it to function. Here are some quotes from the transcript:

Me: So YouTube has changed its policy on how the videos can be used in Microsoft PowerPoint. Can you share the actual wording of that decision so I can give it to Microsoft?

YouTube: The only option on how you are able to play videos without the ads is to use a link where it will direct you to the website. I've further checked this information with our specialists and this is actually working as intended.

So, unless Microsoft has other information to share I suppose this closes the case.

I was famous for my seamless PowerPoints at the music school where I teach. Now the functionality of my delivery has gone out the window and I've lost a ton of hours on my presentations that need to be fully revamped.

I'm bummed.

As per your description, this issue occurred in new profile and PowerPoint online without the same issue, and the URL changed. This issue may be due to some conflict between the PowerPoint client and YuTube. I'm afraid this issue needs to be investigated from the backend side via remote assistance and collect the background logs. As this Forum community has limited resources, the backend support team there has more permission than us, they have more resources to investigate the issue from the backend, they have Escalate channel to escalate your issue to check more and collect log reports for the root cause.

In the meanwhile, I also recommend you report this issue to Youtube Support.

And also send feedback from within PowerPoint > Help menu > Feedback > Report a problem. Feedback submit by this way directly goes to the related team. This is the way to let the developers know this issue and help to investigate it.

I have been experiencing this same problem. YouTube has said they never guaranteed ads free for embedded videos. I told them I call their bull ****. I've been embedding videos for two years and have never once had an ad show up, and now, last week, all of a sudden, they're showing up. They changed something either on purpose or by accident that caused this to start. The funny thing is they are all political ads that I'm seeing.

It certainly sounds as though YouTube has changed their terms of service to allow them to display ads in videos hosted in other programs (web sites other than theirs, PowerPoint, etc).

Does the Premium service allow you to download videos? If so, that might be a workaround (though a tedious one): Download the video to your computer then insert it from there.

Another approach would be to use video capture software to capture the video as you play it directly from YouTube, though I'm fairly certain that this would NOT be within YouTube's terms of service and might get you into legal trouble if they catch on. There. You've been warned. :-)
