EDIT: I uninstalled and reinstalled Word as an older version (16.84) and Word works perfectly well.
I have an Apple MacBook Pro M1 chip from late 2020. It works perfectly well. However, Word starts lagging when I use it for a few minutes. This is not an issue with my computer – all other programmes work perfectly well while Word is lagging.
I tried uninstalling Word and reinstalling it, but this problem has persisted. I have closed all other apps bar Word, but Word still lags. I have also tried moving documents out of my OneDrive folder so they weren't being autosaved onto the cloud, but the lag persisted. Running Activity Monitor on Mac does not show excessive strain on Memory, CPU etc. from Word.
I recently installed an update, and I wonder whether this is the cause? Stumped as to how to fix this issue.

Yes, it has been happening for over a week at my end. If you have a MAC, you can use their Word version or Word through Google Gmail. These versions of word work fine for me.

I can't even get Word to run long enough before crashing at this point to copy and paste my documents to elsewhere or to print. I have important assignments due in the next few days and to say I'm stressed is an understatement.
I feel your pain.
It was the same for me. I had an assignment due on Sunday. What should have taken an hour or so on the third draft took me all day because Word would only give me 5 -10 minutes before crashing. Sometimes, it didn't even save, so I started to screenshot each paragraph.
Try typing into an email or using the Google version of the Word- save it to iCloud.
Monitor - the Mbytes in activity monitor- when it gets too high, save, shut it down, and start again.
I am now using the Apple Word version, and all is good.

I had the same issue. I installed the beta (just for Word, v 16.86), and that unusable lag is gone. So, hopefully, there will be a stable release soon to fix it!
I'm now having the same problem.
Word updated May 19th and I had no problems until I updated my Mac to Sonoma from Ventura the day before yesterday.
I need word for school. I can't wait for Word to catch up to my typing.
