MS Word lagging on 2020 Apple M1 MacBook Pro

EDIT: I uninstalled and reinstalled Word as an older version (16.84) and Word works perfectly well.

I have an Apple MacBook Pro M1 chip from late 2020. It works perfectly well. However, Word starts lagging when I use it for a few minutes. This is not an issue with my computer – all other programmes work perfectly well while Word is lagging.

I tried uninstalling Word and reinstalling it, but this problem has persisted. I have closed all other apps bar Word, but Word still lags. I have also tried moving documents out of my OneDrive folder so they weren't being autosaved onto the cloud, but the lag persisted. Running Activity Monitor on Mac does not show excessive strain on Memory, CPU etc. from Word.

I recently installed an update, and I wonder whether this is the cause? Stumped as to how to fix this issue.

    Hi Victoria,

    Yes, the Mac support person binned all MS apps and then downloaded a different version.

    Mac online support is helpful - try contacting them if you have the time and are still having issues.

    I was told by Mac support not to update MS to Mac until the issue is resolved. I have an MS icon on my doc asking me to update it, but I ignore it.

    The Mac Tech person stated this would take some time for MS techs to resolve as they rely on feedback from the help window sending data when it crashes.

    I have also downloaded the Mac version of Office Suite (30-day free trial) as a backup should the issue happen again.

    Hi,

    I'm having the same issues with word, - your advice is to put the newer version of word in the waste basket, and then re-install - but the link to the re-install means re-installing all the apps, word, excel, teams, ppt etc.. so do I have to bin all those existing apps before installing the newer ones?

    Please understand that you are not communicating with Microsoft here, The site is hosted by Microsoft but their design & development personnel do nor monitor it.

    Those who respond here are other users of the software as well as some 3rd party agents. Nobody in these Communities has any control over the quality control of Microsoft products.

    This issue is known to the developers but as yet no remedy has been provided other than reverting to version 16.84 until the fix ships.
