Over-allocated field/column for tasks

I have a plan with some tasks that have over-allocated resources assigned. It's indicated in the indicators column and is obvious anyway. I want to insert the over-allocated column and group on that, but it doesn't come up with yes for any of them. I can work around it, but why?

    Trevor,

    Good question. Apparently the Overallocated field is an Assignment Resource field. . . well, sort of. It can be grouped in the Resource Usage view, not the Task Usage view. But, interestingly enough, it can also be grouped in a Gantt Chart view.

    Go figure.

    John, are you sure it can be grouped in Gantt chart view? OK, it can be grouped but I just get No for everything.

    Well now, that's interesting. Before I responded I did a quick test on a client's file that had some overallocations. I did a group at Gantt Chart level and it appeared to work so I fired off a response. But. . .I didn't look close enough. When I look at that same file today I see only a few of the overallocated tasks have the overallocation flag, most do not. Once again, gremlins in the Outback. If I have some time, I'll see if I can figure out why.

    I can explain the oddities you are seeing. The Overallocated field only displays a Yes value when the resource is overallocated on that one task, such as when you assign the resource at a Units value of 200%, but their Max. Units value is only 100%. It DOES NOT display overallocations for a resource that is overallocated on parallel tasks. Because of this, the Overallocated column is practically useless. Hope this helps.
