Word is slow to respond version 16.85 in unknown version of Mac OS

Split from this thread.

Exactly the same problem here:

  1. Problem appears after update to Version 16.85 (24051214) Microsoft® Word for Mac
  2. Problem is linked to spellchecker: any use of it triggers this complete freeze. Note that spellchecker can very easily be triggered incidentally, as shown in image above from Charles M1: The spelling popup balloon already crashes Word.
  3. The only way to stop the programme is through a Force Quit. Microsoft Word gets completely stuck, as described previously. To great despair, restarting Word does not trigger the usual Recovery and everything is lost. I could not locate any recovery file.
  4. It has nothing to do with OneDrive: the Word document was not located on OneDrive nor being synced through OneDrive. Completely shutting down OneDrive does not resolve the issue, it still happens..

So the problem seems to be directly caused by some change in the spelling module in the latest Word version for Mac.

Sincerely, Stan

After the issue was reported in the forums, Microsoft recognized that this was a bug in Office for Mac. See the reply by Jim Gordon on the first page of the long thread at https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/word-is-lagging-on-my-mac/a520fea1-564f-4118-b73b-ada1d8a0e9ef.

As far as I know, nobody has suggested that Apple was to blame for this.

Yes, it's been fixed with at least one update since. Go to HELP in the Menu and select Check for update. You need to restart Word after the update. Have a great evening.

Does anyone know whether this has been fixed?

Reinstalled earlier version and works fine but autoupdate keeps bugging me and I will not cave in until it is absolutely 100% without any doubt working.

    Hello,

If it helps, I've had no problems since installed an older version of Word, go back 2 release versions and try installing that?

First of all your quotes are insulting.

Second of all, I went through all your suggestions and none of the items you refer to on your list proved to be evident.

Apparently v16.85.2 has not yet been released to the Current Channel.

Use Help> Check for Updates then click the Advanced button & select Current Channel (Preview) from the list of Update Channels. The 16.85.2 update then will be available.

You can revert to Current Channel

    Nothing above worked.

Big help thanks, and I don't think the problem is mine, an entire school in Denmark uses Word on Mac and it is greatly interfering with exams. Have you read that thread? Thanks Microsoft word. I am begging to think this program and the software developers are idiots. Who knows, maybe it's Sonoma - made you people should put your heads together. After all we are all paying for this.

But as far as being an idiot, a simple procedure such as changing mm to inches does not stay. I am told to click on the 'save' button or the OK button but there is no such button. I return to my document and measurements are still in mm. So something is wrong with what you people are doing. A simple change such as that shouldn't be complicated. But then again, I'm the idiot.

    Thanks

ps I did google insider program and found the page there, but it had nothing to do with your complicated instructions. Sorry if this appeared rude, but I have some serious writing in progress and I am fed up. I'm not sure if I will renew next year. Paying for a service that doesn't work for a month is not worth it. Microsoft makes millions, they should have people on this resolving the issue in a matter of days, for all us idiots, who, I repeat, are putting out hard earned cash.
