Mac Onedrive app: shared folders don't appear in Finder any more, and files seem to be online only.

I had a folder shared with me, and I could fully sync it to my own mac - all the office files were available offline on my own mac (word, excel, ppt). It appeared as a folder in Finder in the Onedrive folder.

Since yesterday the shared folder has disappeared from finder, and all the files are no longer on the mac. They don't show up in a spotlight search. The folder has been replaced by a url that opens the shared folder online.

The folder is fully available when I access Onedrive through the web.

I can also open the shared files on Onedrive through the native Mac apps, if they appear in recent files, or browse to "Online locations", but these only show the recent locations that I had accessed through finder. I can't browse the entire folder through an app.

I have tried the following:

  • restarted the Mac
  • Signed out of Onedrive and signed back in again
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled Onedrive
  • In the web Onedrive I have clicked "add shortcut to my files". This places a url to the oneline folder in finder, which is useless.
  • Reset Onedrive via "Show Package Contents", etc....

Happening on both Mac M2 Air and Macbook Pro Intel, both have current versions of SW for both Mac and Office.

    Update - same problem!

This morning I looked at my work files and suddenly almost everything is gone - I've been trying to fix it all day and I've come to the conclusion that I just have a .url folder

    ****!!!

As mentioned, same problem since about March 2024. So irritating. I have sent multiple emails and get broken English replies calling me "you are very dear to me". I have never felt the power of big business until I met with this absolute wall of inability to access any useful help.

    Main Problems

    1. can only open shared file and edit on web
    2. can't upload a new file to the shared file if you aren't the owner.

SO.... we have a slightly updated work around... Not ideal but something and it might help someone else..

    1. You can at least now edit on desktop. (top right, edit button, drop down, option to open on desktop.)

2)The other person saves their new file to a folder they have now also shared with me. When I open their file on the web, under the "edit" drop down menu, I open on the desktop. Then I save a copy to our main shared file where they can also edit (& now edit on desktop!) and I delete the old copy in their shared file.

Someone really needs to create an exact clone of Excel and release it on a torrent. Then there would be no reason for anyone to continue to pay ransom payments to a company that has such disdain for its own customers and such disinterest in the customer experience.

I really hope whatever product manager is responsible for this becomes unemployable.
