Mac Onedrive app: shared folders don't appear in Finder any more, and files seem to be online only.

I had a folder shared with me, and I could fully sync it to my own mac - all the office files were available offline on my own mac (word, excel, ppt). It appeared as a folder in Finder in the Onedrive folder.

Since yesterday the shared folder has disappeared from finder, and all the files are no longer on the mac. They don't show up in a spotlight search. The folder has been replaced by a url that opens the shared folder online.

The folder is fully available when I access Onedrive through the web.

I can also open the shared files on Onedrive through the native Mac apps, if they appear in recent files, or browse to "Online locations", but these only show the recent locations that I had accessed through finder. I can't browse the entire folder through an app.

I have tried the following:

  • restarted the Mac
  • Signed out of Onedrive and signed back in again
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled Onedrive
  • In the web Onedrive I have clicked "add shortcut to my files". This places a url to the oneline folder in finder, which is useless.
  • Reset Onedrive via "Show Package Contents", etc....

Happening on both Mac M2 Air and Macbook Pro Intel, both have current versions of SW for both Mac and Office.

I've been having the same problem here (Brazil) for a few months. I've already opened a few tickets, but I haven't received any satisfactory answers.

I noticed that it's not really a bug, but rather an intentional change to reduce the traffic load on Microsoft's servers. I say this because I found reports from users in February/2024 and the "problem" has been gradually advancing for users over the past few months. For me, it happened in April/2024. It's as if they were advancing slowly and silently so as not to generate an avalanche of tickets.

I'll need to migrate to another cloud tool, does anyone recommend one? Dropbox, Google Drive... something else?

Same problem here but currently only with Finder in MacBook, the OneDrive app works on the iPad and iPhone, meaning that there is a shared folder in the app in both devices.

Anyone know when this is supposed to be resolved? I just started a business and set up M365 for Business.

This is such a basic, table stakes feature. MSFT is one of the highest valued companies in the world. How is this a problem?

What's the latest official statement from MSFT on this?

We will be switching to Google for our email, documents, share drive, etc if this is not resolved ASAP.

Please, please email onedrive support directly throught the help option in the app/ online. They say it's a priority but that is the same answer I got in July. Maybe a flood of complaints in their inboxes will help...

I got this reply from them. Apart from anything else, the poor English makes me mad. (No disrespect to second language learners, I know from experience how hard it is, but this is the face of Microsoft!)

I appreciate for sharing the detailed information with the article which helped in understanding the issue.

Please be informed, we are aware of this issue and our engineering team is actively investigating to resolve it. We appreciate for helping us out to track this issue down. Ensure windows and OneDrive app are up to date.

Meanwhile, you can continue to click on the mounted folders and access the shared files with the web browser.

Currently there is no specific ETA as we are still working on the solution. However, the issue will be fixed soon because it is raised on high priority.

We are archiving the case as we cannot troubleshoot it further but we are working on the case actively and will roll out a fix soon.

Agreed, I just emailed them directly.

Really hoping for a timeline of a fix. I genuinely just want to know if it will ever actually be fixed or if they are attempting to change the OneDrive functionality.

If they are going to fix it, I asked for a guess of when that would be. another week, a month, a year, 5 years?

We need some sort of communication. I am not even threatening to leave the subscription. I am keeping my subscription because I use other aspects of Microsoft 365. I need to know if I need to spend the time to migrate over to another OneDrive equivalent and then train coworkers how to use a new platform. It is a major effort to switch how we were doing things.
