Mac Onedrive app: shared folders don't appear in Finder any more, and files seem to be online only.

I had a folder shared with me, and I could fully sync it to my own mac - all the office files were available offline on my own mac (word, excel, ppt). It appeared as a folder in Finder in the Onedrive folder.

Since yesterday the shared folder has disappeared from finder, and all the files are no longer on the mac. They don't show up in a spotlight search. The folder has been replaced by a url that opens the shared folder online.

The folder is fully available when I access Onedrive through the web.

I can also open the shared files on Onedrive through the native Mac apps, if they appear in recent files, or browse to "Online locations", but these only show the recent locations that I had accessed through finder. I can't browse the entire folder through an app.

I have tried the following:

  • restarted the Mac
  • Signed out of Onedrive and signed back in again
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled Onedrive
  • In the web Onedrive I have clicked "add shortcut to my files". This places a url to the oneline folder in finder, which is useless.
  • Reset Onedrive via "Show Package Contents", etc....

Happening on both Mac M2 Air and Macbook Pro Intel, both have current versions of SW for both Mac and Office.

    This seems to be resolved for me too, after having lost my shared folders to Internet Shortcuts back in April 2025 (I know that others have been affected for much longer).

    Yesterday, my OneDrive said it was processing some change for several hours, then proceeded to download several hundred gigabytes of files. This morning I noticed that my shared folders that had previously been Internet Shortcuts had been renamed, and the old shared folders reappearing as proper folders like they had been before.

    Hopefully this fix will propagate to everyone else in good time.

    It looks like every so often someone says it's fixed, while new people are hit by the issue. In the meantime Microsoft say nothing.

    I've already changed my workflow, I'm not going back to Onedrive until Microsoft make a clear statement as to what the issue is and commit to it being resolved. Otherwise it's not worth the effort.

    Good afternoon, 13 months later everything started working again as it did last April 2024. Shared files still have the tiny arrow indicating as if they were an URL but when you click on the shared file, the files are right there saved on my device. Previously it took me to an internet page.

    What a headache and disappointment it has been. I was sceptical reading the other posts that "things just started working" but with me that's exactly what they just did.

    I hope it soon works for everyone else.

    Hi everyone

    I am having the same issue for almost 8 months now. Countless customer support emails have been sent through and they even stopped responding. I believe Microsoft is now on a. new policy of ignoring queries regarding any issue and move on. Will be looking to migrate to other alternative, which will be a huge time consuming task but seems like thats the only alternate.
