Mac Onedrive app: shared folders don't appear in Finder any more, and files seem to be online only.

I had a folder shared with me, and I could fully sync it to my own mac - all the office files were available offline on my own mac (word, excel, ppt). It appeared as a folder in Finder in the Onedrive folder.

Since yesterday the shared folder has disappeared from finder, and all the files are no longer on the mac. They don't show up in a spotlight search. The folder has been replaced by a url that opens the shared folder online.

The folder is fully available when I access Onedrive through the web.

I can also open the shared files on Onedrive through the native Mac apps, if they appear in recent files, or browse to "Online locations", but these only show the recent locations that I had accessed through finder. I can't browse the entire folder through an app.

I have tried the following:

  • restarted the Mac
  • Signed out of Onedrive and signed back in again
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled Onedrive
  • In the web Onedrive I have clicked "add shortcut to my files". This places a url to the oneline folder in finder, which is useless.
  • Reset Onedrive via "Show Package Contents", etc....

Happening on both Mac M2 Air and Macbook Pro Intel, both have current versions of SW for both Mac and Office.

    Same problem here but currently only with Finder in MacBook, the OneDrive app works on the iPad and iPhone, meaning that there is a shared folder in the app in both devices.

    I've been having the same problem here (Brazil) for a few months. I've already opened a few tickets, but I haven't received any satisfactory answers.

    I noticed that it's not really a bug, but rather an intentional change to reduce the traffic load on Microsoft's servers. I say this because I found reports from users in February/2024 and the "problem" has been gradually advancing for users over the past few months. For me, it happened in April/2024. It's as if they were advancing slowly and silently so as not to generate an avalanche of tickets.

    I'll need to migrate to another cloud tool, does anyone recommend one? Dropbox, Google Drive... something else?

    Just FYI this is not just a MAC issue, I run Windows 11 on several PCs at home and use the family subscription to enable a dedicated "House" user to be able to share these house files (accounts, bills, insurance docs etc) with my wife and I. We have the same problem, now just have a shortcut to the "House" files in our own OneDrive's to our online OneDrive where we have to use a web browser to open and edit these files.

    I'm a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer and worked in IT as a consultant for MS products for 25 years, it comes as no surprise that MS have either decided they don't want that offline folder file sync available for people on the extremely cheap Family plan or if in fact it is a wider but not affecting everyone using Onedrive on a business plan then MS have made a hash of a software update or datacentre migration (as per some of the other forums) and the fix is extremely challenging. Having worked professionally with all flavours of MS operating systems, Exchange, Lync, Teams, Active Directory and everything else they do in their stack including O365/M365 this kind of thing happens on a routine basis but poor IT departments have to pick up the pieces. all the hashtags - change control, sandbox testing, select super user testing, roll back planning etc etc seems to me MS internal teams are a bit like the old adage Next Next Next finish and hope for the best.

    After weeks of research on this subject it seems that Microsoft intentionally cancelled the shared folder syncing feature for personal OneDrive accounts (or is in the process of rolling out since not all are affected yet). For me it had become very clear that the move is to force people to migrate to the business plan instead. If you try to find a solution directly from Microsoft you will run into "This feature is not available for Personal OneDrive, only for business or work school education accounts" which wasn't the case in the past.
