In the last several days I have noticed my laptop CPU fan blowing constantly. The culprit seems to be 4 identical processes using the same amount of CPU as each other continuously hovering at about 8-12%. This keeps the fan blowing 24/7.
The Task Manager shows the Process name as "Microsoft 365 and Office (32 bit)" and no Office applications are running. When I view the details the executable names are "odt____.tmp.exe" with the underscores representing some 3- 4-character hex value, e.g. C67A.
I can end the tasks but they come back after a time and the CPU fan turns on again.
What are these processes and can I turn them off?

Yes. Same for me. They must have rolled out a fix for this. I'm gonna say case closed and if you have this problem, make sure you've got all of the MS updates.
I don't know the resolution, but this stopped for me on January 9th. That's the last day I saw any of the odt*.tmp.exe files created. No unusual processes running anymore.
So a battery reset also fixed your problem to. Oh i noticed that i doesnt always work, becouse a friend of my had it to and did the same thing but after a day it returned.
I also did nothing and the last time it spun up and ate CPU was in the early AM PST of 1/10. In the afternoon and this morning nothing. Checked C:\Windows\Temp and found new cfg and odt files. Only updates in update history:
Of course, this thing reaches out to Microsoft in the cloud, and something out there has likely changed.
I did not some logs in the same folder. Did a couple of compares and then lost interest. But did note that older, failing versions had 8 instances of "Office.Experimentation" object where working one had only 1. But this may be total coincidence and hard to diagnose without correct tools to parse logs.
But IMHO, Microsoft fixed. If I see back, I will post another reply.

we had the same issue i tried to do a battery reset like half a hour ago. After the battery reset i did not see the Odt__.tmp anymore.
I dont know why it worked and how but what i do know is that is not showing up anymore. But i dont know if it well be permanent. I will keep u in check and will let u know if it solves the problem completely.
