When I edit a client's file shared from their Sharepoint, I cannot get desktop Word app to save it back to the location. Why?

I have a gmail primary email address and do not use Teams or Sharepoint myself. One of my clients uses Sharepoint. I am not part of their core team (I am a freelancer who edits documents for them). When they share a file for me to edit in Sharepoint, I can edit it online, but if I try to open and edit it in the Word desktop app, the file does not save back to the Sharepoint location. Why? What do I need to do for the file to automatically save back to their location?
